Based on many years’ experience of large, high-end, production systems, Sobey has developed an innovative network production system, the Media Rainbow system. Media Rainbow system together with the Sony XDCAM Professional Disc system has enhanced the efficiency, and streamlined the entire processes of program production – introducing a ”create once, re-use often” philosophy to the broadcast market.
Today’s broadcasting demands much more efficient operations, including nonlinear, network-based operations, use of metadata, and interoperability with other devices, and system flexibility including easy migration from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD).
In response to these demands, Sobey now introduces a new generation of Media Rainbow to realize system sizes which customers require.
Cost effective system
Media Rainbow incorporates new functionality and uses recent network technologies to reduce system cost. For example, Media Rainbow use Sony’s latest codec technology to realize cost-effective systems. With MPEG-2 Long GOP as the HD format, Media Rainbow is able to deliver a full HD environment. This is one example of how the optimized and highly cost-effective system is implemented.
Media Rainbow offers a unique workflow, developed together with customers to have the best tools for the operators’ needs. By closely cooperating with newsroom computer, archive, and other vendors, we’ve been able to achieve a highly-integrated workflow.
All-in-one system for production
Media Rainbow covers all operations of news production, starting from planning and acquisition, continuing onto filing, editing, playout, distribution, and on through to archive. Interfaces with a variety of third-party systems such as newsroom computer systems (NRCS) and archive systems is also an easy task, offering the power typically available only on high-end systems. At the same time, the Media Rainbow system is extremely flexible and scalable – it can easily increase the number of editing terminals and input devices, plus the storage capacity, as well as enabling redundancy, such as the addition of backup playout servers.
Effective editing environment
The Media Rainbow system contains two different editing concepts. The proxy-only editing which is optimized for journalists, and the craft editing. The Proxy only editor offers a huge group of operators access to the material at the same time, using journalist workstations. The craft editor provides multi-format editing capabilities including unique developments optimized for HD MPEG-2 Long GOP editing. These two different concepts are realized by our editors. They provide an editing environment that most effectively utilizes the network.
Web application Support
Media Rainbow provides web applications. It provides a less hardware and lower cost installation resolution for all customers. It realize the mobile editing into practice. Moreover, it is easy to connect to Media Rainbow system wherever you are and whenever you want once you have a browser which can connect into internet.
Power of Proxy
Media Rainbow is using proxy material to speed up and to share materials. When a customer is using XDCAM devices for acquisition, the Media Rainbow system ingests proxy file firstly, so that journalists or editors can share materials and start editing as soon as proxies are available to operate. The high-resolution material from XDCAM disc will be transferred as background tasks while journalists are viewing and editors are editing proxy material.
Power of Metadata
Starting from the planning stages all the way through acquisition (if XDCAM is used), editing, playout, and the archive stages of the workflow, the system enables metadata to be managed and passed onto the next process. Metadata contributes to the efficiency of the entire operation and is a value added for all of the material as well as a link between high-resolution and low-resolution proxy.
Media Rainbow offers two different integrations with archive systems. The first Integration is based on a third-party archive solution. The second is the Sony News Nearline Archive, an archive solution optimized for the Media Rainbow system. Independent of the selected Archive Application, the Archive storage can be based on – XDCAM deck, Tape Library (PetaSite and other model), ODA library, and RAID storage.

Handling of various content formats
Media Rainbow can store both SD and HD format materials in the Material Server and offer SD/HD mixed operation to editors.
CODEC that is being used on XDCAM, can be handled on the system natively.
- Multi- Aspect Ratio
In transition from SD to HD, there is a requirement to handle SD 16:9 as well as 4:3 aspect ratio, not only 16:9 for HD.
Media Rainbow can handle SD 16:9 aspect ratio picture, meaning squeezed picture. And editors supports 16:9 SD project.
System expansion and migration
Based on the latest IT technologies, Media Rainbow is flexible and can be expanded based on customers’ needs. Migration and integration from other systems can be realized, using standardized interfaces and protocols. The level of integration or migration depends on the systems and cannot be guaranteed in general, but Sobey is open to start detailed discussions for customers with specific requests.
The system architecture offers maximum flexibility for expanding Ingest, Craft Editors, Proxy Clients and Playout studios based on customers’ demands. In detail, expansion of the number of I/O ports, editors, application terminals, and storage capacity is available. The entire system is expandable and can be divided into subsystems for easier management.
From middle to extra-large scale
Media Rainbow can support from middle to extra-large sized systems to fulfil market requirements.
Migration from SD to HD
The migration from SD to HD is mandatory for today’s solutions, therefore Media Rainbow is offering an upgrade path from SD to HD. The system will be directly designed to cover SD and HD operation. In cases where customers need to start with the lowest cost system, Media Rainbow can be designed as SD-only and can be upgraded at any later time to HD. For such cases, customers need to understand that downtime might be required to reconfigure the system hardware.
Content management and security
In a networked environment it is essential to have effective content management and security systems in place to protect and manage the total environment. These are standard features of the Media Rainbow applications.
- Access and functions restriction
Access restriction to content, according to the user’s login and group membership, are supported.
- Rights management
Copyright information is contained in the material metadata field to be used as an indication of restrictions for material reuse.
Interfacing to external devices and systems
Media Rainbow offers a wide range of Interfaces to interact with external devices or systems. All of the interfaces are based on standards.
- MXF file exchange between different systems
To fulfill today’s requirement for material sharing, Media Rainbow supports MXF exchange as a part of the integration strategy for third-party systems, including NLEs.
- Integration with XDCAM / XDCAM HD
In addition to the existing VTRs, connections to new devices, such as XDCAM, are supported.
- Integration with NRCS/ Archive
Integration with newsroom computer systems (NRCS) and 3rd party archive systems is supported.
System reliability and maintenance
Media Rainbow is designed for 24/7 operation with maximum reliability. It’s delivered with tools for easy maintenance.
No single point of failure
The system is being designed to avoid the possibility of a single point of failure affecting the entire system. If trouble does occur with one of the system components, the entire system operation will not be affected.
Warning & logging
The system displays warnings about operations at application terminals. It also displays troubles and saves logs, on the System Watch, for software working in the background. Log collection service is provided to collect log file from separated PC to one server. This makes it easy to detect impending failures, or to verify the point of failure.
Devices connected to the network, and their statuses, can be monitored by SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).
